Parsecs

Parsecs - an epic space adventure

Easy to pick up, hard to master, Parsecs is a beautiful, fast-paced, twitch-gameplay, dodge-the-obstacles, endless runner with a space twist!

Gameplay is simple: direct the ship by flicking anywhere on the screen while dodging obstacles and gathering shields and space nukes. Direct your ship through the top of the screen to fly out the bottom in the same direction.

MY ROLE
As the sole designer for Parsecs, my job is to define the visual branding and overall theme for the game. I have done all of the UI and illustrations to date, and I continue to iterate on the game on a regular basis.

RESULTS
Since our launch of the free version in November 2015, we've reached nearly 10,000 downloads and that number climbs every day. We are slowly working on building our userbase through the mPLUS Rewards system by SessionM.

Early prototypes

Before getting into the nitty gritty, we tested the basic concept of Parsecs by using simple shapes to validate game play. We tested on friends and family over the course of a few months, and then slowly began adding refinements to the game.

Ship & obstacles

Parsecs includes two main obstacles: worm holes and asteroids. Wormholes suck up everything in their path, and asteroids fly around randomly. From time to time you'll encounter asteroids contained in bubbles. Hit them and they’ll pop, causing the asteroids within them to go crazy.

Planets

25 planets in 6 different sizes including one sun were created for Parsecs. The sizes correspond to the distance travelled, with larger ones appearing the farther you get, reducing the amount of space you have to maneuver the ship. Regular planets act as bumpers, but the scorched planets and sun will destroy the ship.
